The Conspiracy at Dar al-Nadwa

Safar, 1 AH (622 CE)

Dar al-Nadwa, Makkah

Plot against Islam

Learning of the Prophet's ﷺ plan to migrate, the Quraysh convened an emergency council at Dar al-Nadwa. After debating various plans, they decided on Abu Jahl's proposal: to select one strong young man from each tribe to collectively assassinate Muhammad ﷺ in his bed, thus spreading the blood-guilt across all tribes and making retaliation impossible for Banu Hashim.

Why this matters

Allah informed the Prophet ﷺ of the plot through revelation. This was the Quraysh's most serious attempt to kill him — a coordinated assassination plan. The Prophet ﷺ asked Ali ibn Abi Talib to sleep in his bed as a decoy, covered in his green cloak, and slipped out past the assassins unseen, reciting the opening verses of Surah Ya-Sin.

Quran references

Surah Al-Anfal, 30

And [remember, O Muhammad], when those who disbelieved plotted against you to restrain you or kill you or evict you [from Makkah]. But they plan, and Allah plans. And Allah is the best of planners.

Surah Ya-Sin, 9

And We have put before them a barrier and behind them a barrier and covered them, so they do not see.
