Under the Care of Abdul Muttalib
46-44 BH (577-579 CE)
Makkah مكة المكرمة
Childhood
After the death of his mother, Muhammad ﷺ was taken into the care of his grandfather Abdul Muttalib, the chief of the Banu Hashim and the custodian of the Ka'bah. Abdul Muttalib loved him deeply and treated him with exceptional tenderness, allowing him to sit on his own mat near the Ka'bah — a privilege given to no other child.
Why this matters
Abdul Muttalib's deep love and special treatment of Muhammad ﷺ reflected an intuitive recognition of his grandson's exceptional nature. His grandfather's elevated status in Makkan society also ensured Muhammad ﷺ was exposed to leadership, diplomacy, and the affairs of the Quraysh from a young age.
