غزوة حنين

The Battle of Hunayn

Shawwal, 8 AH (630 CE)

Valley of Hunayn, between Makkah and Ta'if وادي حنين

Expedition

Shortly after the conquest of Makkah, the tribes of Hawazin and Thaqif gathered 20,000 warriors to fight the Muslims. The Prophet ﷺ marched with 12,000 — the largest Muslim army ever assembled. Initially, the Muslims were ambushed in the Hunayn valley and many fled in confusion. The Prophet ﷺ stood firm on his mule, calling the Companions back, until the tide turned and the Muslims won a decisive victory.

Why this matters

Hunayn demonstrated that numbers alone do not guarantee victory — only reliance on Allah does. Some Muslims had felt invincible due to their large numbers, and the initial rout was a divine reminder. The Prophet's ﷺ personal courage in standing firm while arrows flew around him, calling 'I am the Prophet, there is no lie! I am the son of Abdul Muttalib!' was extraordinary.

Surah At-Tawbah, 25-26

Allah has already given you victory in many regions and on the day of Hunayn, when your great number pleased you, but it did not avail you at all.
