Working as a Shepherd

39-27 BH (~583-596 CE)

Makkah and its surroundings مكة وما حولها

Livelihood

Muhammad ﷺ worked as a shepherd in Makkah, tending sheep for the people of Makkah in return for wages. This was a profession shared by all the Prophets of Allah.

Why this matters

The Prophet ﷺ himself confirmed that every prophet was a shepherd. Shepherding develops patience, vigilance, humility, and the ability to care for a flock — qualities essential for the one who would guide all of humanity. It also kept him connected to the simple, contemplative life.

Hadith references

Sahih al-Bukhari, #2262

Narrated by: Abu Hurairah

The Prophet ﷺ said: 'Allah did not send any prophet who was not a shepherd.' The Companions asked: 'Were you a shepherd too?' He said: 'Yes, I used to tend the sheep of the people of Makkah for some qirats.'
